Administrative History | The scheme for the North Western Regional Library System was first suggested at a meeting in Manchester in 1934, and the first meeting was held on 11 December 1934. The original purpose of the system was to promote co-operation between public libraries in Lancashire and Cheshire, facilitate the loan of books between authorities and to maintain a union catalogue of books.
With the Governments increased emphasis on regional development following the 1997 election, it was decided that all cultural/information services in the region should be unified to provide a stronger voice in government affairs. NWRLS was disbanded in 2002, and from April 2002 its responisbilities were assumed by Libraries North West. |
